PLAN B SKATEBOARDS FROM THE 90S TO TODAY.

Plan B skateboards is the brand that all skaters around the world know. Both today and thirty years ago. Plan B is one of the giants of brands that has totally revolutionized modern skateboarding.

To fully understand the beginnings of Plan B skateboards, we need to start with its founder, Mike Ternasky. After leaving Tony Magnusson’s H-Street, Mike came up with an innovative and modern brand concept.

This is how Mike Ternasky put together a really strong team. Many skaters came from the H Street team, who decided to follow Ternasky in his new project.

The new super brand project was supported and formed as part of Dwindle Distribution, then headed by Steve Rocco and Rodney Mullen.

And that’s how the skateboarding legend was born. Plan B Skateboards was born. The original team consisted of Danny Way, Colin McKay, Rodney Mullen, Mike Carroll, Matt Hensley, Rick Howard, Sean Sheffey, and Sal Barbier.

As soon as Mike Ternasky had put the team together, he immediately put his revolutionary marketing ideas into action.

His ideas made the newly formed Plan B brand a worldwide sensation. Ternasky came from Powell Peralta, the brand that had dominated the scene and won over the masses for decades.

But something was becoming outdated in the skateboarding business in America. Those who ran skateboarding in the 70s and 80s no longer had the ability to evolve skateboarding as it should have.

PLAN B AND MIKE TERNASKY A REVOLUTION IN SKATEBOARDING

More and more people were skateboarding in America and around the world, and a revolution in street skateboarding was needed. Mike Ternasky put together one of the strongest street teams in the world.

The first mega handrails, the first switch gaps, and a lot of other tricks that changed the history of skateboarding in those years were introduced.

Mike Ternasky’s vision was to create the dream team that would become the NBA of skateboarding. And so it was in the future. Mike, a great friend of Rodney Mullen, convinced him to change his way of skating.

Mullen was a freestyle star in the 1980s, but his discipline and popularity took a huge downturn.

Pro skater Rodney Mullen was convinced by Mike Ternasky to put his freestyle skills to use in street skating. The result was an incredible Mullen who came up with amazing tricks that still blow people away today. Everyone believed that Mullen would transfer his tricks to transitions.

Mike was a pillar of support for all the guys on the team. Mike was like a father who gave energy and positivity to his children.

The team was completely galvanized and united by the work Mike Ternasky put into the Plan B project.

And so it was that in 1992, skateboarding began its evolution. It was the year the Plan B team video “Questionable” was released.

THE WORLD OF SKATEBOARDING CHANGES IN 1992 WITH THE RELEASE OF “QUESTIONABLE”

Questionable,” the first Plan B skateboards video, immediately went around the world after its release. The legendary video caught the attention of all those young people who started skating in the early 90s and found themselves facing an epoch-making change.

The video was a compilation of street super tricks that had never been seen before. From late shovits to pressure flips to all kinds of tricks in switch stance. In short, street skating was changing.

Danny Way was doing monstrous gaps and huge staircases in bs 360. Pat Duffy was sliding and grinding all kinds of handrails that were unthinkable at the time.

All these maneuvers became possible thanks to the radical changes in the concaves and shapes of the boards during those years, between 1990 and 1993. A change in materials certainly allowed the riders of the time to make a quantum leap in the tricks they performed.

The concept of “plaza” was very present with the Embarcadero crew, which was all the rage. Similar situations were created in every city.

Skaters dyed their hair and wore Adidas and Puma to skate. Baggy pants were a must, as were XXL T-shirts.

It’s a bit like what’s happening again today. Skateboarding was changing; in fact, it had already changed.

THE FUTURE OF PLAN B AFTER QUESTIONABLE

After the Plan B Skateboards video “Questionable,” the saga continued with two videos released in practically the same year, 1993. The videos were “Smoke Second Hand Smoke” and Ternasky’s last masterpiece, “Virtual Reality.”

During those years, other riders joined the Plan B team. Riders such as Tony Fergusson, Aaron Artis, Jeremy Wray, Ronnie Bertino, and Pat Channita.

Stories of skaters who merged over the years and created the Plan B legend.

THE PREMATURE DEATH OF MIKE TERNASKY (RIP).

In 1994, Mike Ternasky lost his life in a car accident, and the management of Plan B Skateboards suffered drastic consequences. Mike’s passing had a devastating effect on the entire team and his family.

The Plan B Skateboards brand would never be the same again because Mike’s influence was too important and irreplaceable. There were two years of pause and reflection on what had happened. The whole team took a break because the loss of their friend Mike Ternasky was a tremendous shock.

In 1997, a new video directed by Mike’s wife was released. Mary Ternasky directed the video “The Revolution” in honor of her late husband. The video is a mix of new and old riders. As usual, the level of skateboarding is very high.

Both street and vert tricks were out of the ordinary. In the early 2000s, Danny Way and Colin McKay decided to take over the brand to bring it back to its former glory.

Around 2005, the brand, with the collaboration of Paul Rodriguez, resumed its journey and intended to bring back the same enthusiasm and guidelines they had in the past. Plan B was destined to return to greatness, and so the brand had its second beginning about ten years later.

PLAN B SKATEBOARD TODAY AND THE COMPLETE REBIRTH

In just a few years, Danny Way and Colin McKay managed to piece together the dreams that Mike Ternasky had for his Plan B brand.

From 2010 onwards, the team began to grow stronger and stronger. Riders such as Felipe Gustavo, Ryan Sheckler, and Torey Pudwill changed an era. In addition, the legendary Chris Joslin became a symbol of the brand with his powerful, technical, and fast skating.

In particular, the legend of Ryan Sheckler became enormous. The American skater won everyone over with his tricks, and Plan B skateboards enjoyed one success after another.

Today, the team is very strong with the addition of French skater Aurelien Giraud, who is now one of the best skaters on the planet.

Thirty years later, Mike Ternasky’s dream has come true thanks to the dedication of his two pro skater friends, Way and Mc Kay. Today, Plan B skateboards are manufactured in Europe by one of the new generation of skateboard manufacturers.
