SKATEBOARD GROMMETS HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE

Skateboards grommets, which in English are called “skate bushings,” are a very important part of the skateboard because the grommet is that seal made of urethane that holds the whole skate truck together.

There are two grommets in the truck, one on the top and one on the bottom, they sit in the washer and are threaded into the kingping so that the truck can turn and steer.

The washer affects the steering of your truck, if you have soft grommets your skate truck will tend to have very fast sensitive steering. Conversely with hard rubbers the truck’s steering will be stiffer.

There are various hardnesses of skateboard grommets on the market ranging from ultra soft to extra stiff. There can be various shapes of the grommet, from conical to cylindrical. Every little difference affects our steering.

SKATE BUSHINGS THE RIGHT SIZE

To choose the ideal grommet you need to understand where you want to skate. It is also important to understand the right grommet to body weight ratio which can be helpful in choosing .

If you are big definitely your skateboard will steer more, while if you are light you will have a harder time steering.
Two grommets are mounted in the truck, a lower and an upper one.

The lower grommet is usually bigger than the upper one which is smaller and cone-shaped. Sometimes we can also find the lower cone-shaped grommet.

Skate bushings can make all the difference in your sessions. It is important to at least try two or three hardnesses to evaluate any advantages. Try skate bushings with a different hardness than the one you use by default every day

GROMMETS FOR CLASSIC SKATEBOARD TRUCKS

Each skateboard truck sells its own grommets separately to replace when there is a need to change them. Independent, Venture, Thunder, Tensor and many others have grommets for sale in various shapes from cylindrical to conical.

Skate bushings range from supersoft 78 A to the hardest 95 A.
When you need to change your grommets we recommend that you buy grommets from your own brand of truck, if you have an Independent you don’t want to put grommets from Thunder, both as a matter of shape and to always have an accurate match with your set up.

WASHERS AND GROMMETS HOW TO MOUNT THEM ON YOUR SKATE TRUCK

To fit new grommets you have to disassemble the whole truck, then unscrew the kingpin nut and slide off the washers (top and bottom) and both grommets.

The washers are usually different, the top one is smaller than the bottom one that seats the bottom grommet. This is the ‘order on how to put the pieces on:

  • bottom washer (washer).
  • Bottom grommet sits in the washer.
  • truck hanger to cover by inserting the hanger pin into the pivot cup.
  • proceed by threading the grommet into the top and capping it with the washer.
  • finally screw the nut down to where you are most comfortable

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SKATEBOARD AND LONGBOARD GROMMETS

Longboard grommets are different from classic skateboard grommets. Longboard grommets can have different hardnesses and different special features such as, shape and height.

In our skateshop you can find all the grommets to always have an accurate set up in every situation.

SKATE BUSHINGS WHAT HARDNESS TO GET

Skate bushings are made of urethane like skateboard wheels and you measure the hardness with the A scale of hardness exactly the same value scale used for skate wheels.

The ultimate parameter to follow is that a hard grommet makes your turns much stiffer instead a soft grommet will give you more quickness and you will be more agile and have more maneuverability from your skate.

The hardness of the rubbers on the market range from the 78 A which is the super soft size to the 95 A super hard size. The 87 A to 92 A grommet sizes are the most commonly used in street skating, but each person should try skating with different hardnesses and find the precise hardness to steer accurately in every situation.

If you weigh little, don’t put a grommet that is too hard or you won’t steer at all. If you weigh little get a medium to soft grommet from 90 A to 87 A.

While if you weigh more a stiffer grommet is ideal but, nevertheless there is no fixed rule. You can experiment with different hardnesses and choose the one that suits you.
In street skate the hardnesses used by most riders are as follows : 88 A, 90 A, 92 A.

RUBBERS FOR LONGBOARD TRUCKS

The longboard truck is different from the classic skate truck, and the rubbers must also have special characteristics especially for downhill riders where meticulous preparation of all equipment is required.

For downhill, grommets with stepped cone and double stepped barrel shapes are used; these grommets are taller and make steering more dynamic and quicker.

SKATE BUSHINGS WHEN YOU NEED TO CHANGE IT

Your grommets definitely need to be changed if:

  • you have left your skateboard outdoors and by now, even your grommets are dry at this point it is very easy for the grommets to crumble.
  • If your skateboard doesn’t steer very well, ideally you should change the rubbers and try a different hardness.

When you change the grommets tighten the nut and adjust the truck’s steering to find the ideal hardness for you.

When you buy a professional street skate truck from brands such as Independent, Thunder, Venture, Royal, Tensor, and Ace you are assured that you have the grommets that are most commonly used mounted by default.

You will be hard pressed not to find yourself with your new trucks; changing the hardness of the grommet is a priority of experienced skaters.

However, one reason that may make you buy new grommets is because you bought trucks that were too cheap.
