SKATE BOARD WHEELS MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION

If your first questions are: how are skateboard wheels built and what material are skateboard wheels made of, here you will have access to all the information you need.

Skateboard wheels are absolutely all made of urethane. When skateboard wheels started to be made from this material years ago, there was a major revolution in the way skateboarding was done.

The new material, urethane, is a plastic material that processed rightly in different hardnesses fits perfectly on the road to give an unparalleled feel.

Whereas, other plastics that were previously used for skate wheels did not have this characteristic like urethane skateboard wheels are perfect on whatever terrain you decide to skate.

SKATEBOARD WHEEL THE CORE AND THE CONTACT SURFACE

There are two sections into which your skate wheel is divided, the core of the wheel is the part where the skateboard bearings will fit.

In addition to the bearings, the skate wheel spacer also lodges between the two bearings. The size of the bearings is always the same for any skate wheel on the market.

The second section that unlike the core changes in shape is the contact surface of the skate wheel with asphalt or other surface.

The contact surface, can be wider or narrower depending on what the skater’s need is, with a wider contact surface, there will be more stability as opposed to a very narrow skate wheel. There are various sizes and shapes of the wheel you are going to buy.

When you buy wheels, you are not buying one but a set of 4 sold all together. The day you have to change them necessarily, you will have to buy a new set of skate wheels.

To choose the best skate wheels there are two characteristics that matter:the hardness of the skateboard wheels, which is measured in A and B scales. The size of the skateboard wheel, which is critical to choosing the perfect size and is measured in MM millimeters.

SKATEBOARDS WHEEL HARDNESS WHAT TO KNOW

The hardness of urethane wheels, is measured using a scale with the letter A. There is also an alternative measurement to the classic A scale, which is the B measurement scale.

Let’s start by learning about the values of the most important and most widely used hardness that is the A scale.

The A scale of hardness of your skateboard wheels, ranges from 80A to a maximum of 103A ,the higher the value of the number the harder the wheel, conversely a low value towards 80 will give the wheel more softness.

It is very important to consider where you want to skateboard, wheel hardness is chosen depending on what terrain you intend to skate.

Your wheel will have a slipperiness depending on the terrain, now let’s look at all the ideal terrains and hardnesses.

WHEELS FOR SKATEBOARD HARDNESS BETWEEN 99A – 103A.

Let’s examine together what is the perfect match between terrain and ideal urethane hardness so we can understand how to choose skateboard wheels perfectly.

This range of wheel hardness is the most used if you want road wheels, it is undoubtedly the right choice and they are ideal for use on most smooth surfaces of different materials such as plazas, concrete skateparks and wooden skateparks.

For the more technical and experienced skaters, it will be no problem to use the 101 A to 103 A wheels, which are the hardest wheels on the market.

They are ideal for street skate, asphalt surfaces, smooth floors, concrete skateparks, wooden parks and ramps. For street skate we can say that, they are the ideal hardnesses without a shadow of a doubt because they have less grip.

TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

If you are a beginner and want to go to a skatepark with wooden transitions or inside a wooden bowl, we highly recommend wheels of hardness 99A to maximum 100A.

This hardness is absolutely the most all round size there is and it offers a well-balanced hardness to skate all over the place without having problems with slipping too much compared to higher hardnesses

SKATEBOARDING WHEELS HARDNESS BETWEEN 98A – 92A.

This type of wheels are ideal for having a hybrid type of skateboarding. By hybrid we mean that they are ideal for both cruising but also for doing skate tricks, with hardnesses such as 97A – 95A – 92A .

Since they are not super soft, they don’t bounce like the super soft ones and remain very versatile to do some tricks and have the ability to really use them anywhere.

They can be used from rough asphalt to skate ramp wood, this are perfect to be mounted on all popsicle boards, but also on all shaped boards and all old school skate decks.

These hardnesses are ideal for cruising and for those who want to buy a shaped skate board. With a shaped board, the ideal is to fit soft skate wheels for speed and smoothness.

So, a hard skate wheel will be absolutely suitable for street skating and doing tricks.

With a softer, very soft intermediate wheel, you can have fun to use your skateboard for more original and fun turns, frolicking around town or on the boardwalk without having all the ‘friction that a hard wheel causes.

SKATE WHEELS SCALE B and A HARDNESS

In the previous lines, we have learned how to distinguish the various hardnesses of urethane and for which terrains and uses they are good.

We would like to say that, the “A” hardness scale is not the only unit of measurement for the hardness of skate wheels.

There is another unit of measurement which is the “B” scale and is the “A” scale in the higher hardnesses uses hardnesses such as 100A , 101A , 102A , 103A , all these hardnesses are the hardest on the scale.

Some brands such as Bones skateboard wheels use values that are indicated by the letter “B”.

The “B” scale value is 20 points higher than the classic “A” scale, example is the Bones wheels 84 “B” will have a hardness of 104A.

To sum up, the hardness of standard skateboard wheels is 99″A” to 101″A”. Perfect size for beginning skateboarding and street skate tricks.
