GIRL SKATEBOARDS THE BRAND STORY

Girl skateboards is one of the longest running and most influential companies in the global skateboarding scene. It was born in California in the early 90′, exactly in 1993 one of the brands that made history was born. The brand born from legends of the American scene such as Rick Howard, Mike Carroll, Megan Baltimore and Spike Jonze.

A logo was chosen to represent Girl as the one indicating the women’s restroom.

This logo has entered the minds of generations of skaters around the world, the Girl logo is famous worldwide and is instantly recognizable by all skaters. The brand was originally created by Rick Howard to provide a future for all riders when they no longer have the strength to skate professionally.

A turning point for the future of every skaters who even later in life can contribute to the scene with their innovative ideas provided by the brand.

Today those working in the Girl brand are all friends and riders who made history in the 1990s with their innovative skateboarding and their original ideas to develop cutting-edge products.

GIRL SKATEBOARDS FROM 1993 TO THE PRESENT

Since the 1990s Girl has been producing professional skateboards and apparel such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, and accessories.

Since the early days they have become a must-have, the Girl logo is unmistakable and has been put on virtually every piece of clothing possible, girl in almost 30 years has also made numerous collaborations with other major brands.

The brand has always been at the top also thanks to the assistance of Fausto Vitello who has always been a shoulder for the Girl team in their development throughout the years.

During the 1990s the Girl skateboards team consisted of Jovontae Turner, Eric Koston, Guy Mariano, Rudy Johnson, Tim Gavin, Tony Fergusson, Sean Sheffey, and Jeron Wilson. In those days, the brand was a real breath of fresh air in the skateboarding scene. Both the team’s way of skateboarding and the products sold were always top-notch.

In the 90′ important videos such as “Goldfish,” “Mouse,” and “Girl in South Africa” were made.

The girl logo precisely was all the rage everywhere. The logo was created by graphic designer Andy Jenkins who remained with Girl until 2017. In 2017 Jenkins moved on to work for the company Element skateboards.

FROM THE EARLY 2000S THE TEAM THAT CONQUERS THE WORLD

During the 2000s the Girl brand gains more and more popularity, Mike Carroll and Rick Howard set out to make one of the videos that will make history named “Modus Operandi.” The video features skaters who would make waves in the years to follow.

Skaters of the caliber of Brandon Biebel, Sean Malto, Mike Mo Capaldi, and Jeremy Rogers made great contributions to the brand in those years with powerful and technical skating that was coming out of the 1990s and into a new era that is still present in modern day skating today.

Jeremy Rogers after being made pro, in 2005, exited the team shortly after, Rogers was unhappy with his royalty payments. In the years to follow Girl would also award pro skaters status to Malto and Mike Mo.

GIRL SKATEBOARDS THE LEGEND CONTINUE

Girl’s story continues and in 2009 a new pro named Corey Kennedy joins the team after winning numerous competitions. The day Corey Kennedy turned pro the team printed boards with his name on them and one day they were given to a few riders. In the skatepark that day it took 20 minutes for Corey to realize that everyone had the same board with his name printed on it.

In 2013 one of Girl’s historic riders Brian Henderson and Steve Olson announced that they wanted to leave the company. The two riders leave the company to find personal inspiration for their future.

The two pro skaters state that they are not leaving Girl out of dissatisfaction but, to have a personal project in life that would reflect their ideas and lifestyles. During those years, the two formed a company called “3D skateboards.”

THE ERA OF PRETTY SWEET AND GIRL’S REVOLUTION

In 2012 Girl skateboards revolutionized the skateboarding world with the release of the video “Pretty Sweat,” and this video changed the perspective of the way of skateboarding. Pretty Sweat was conceived and made by the mind of the brilliant director “Federico Vitetta” AKA “Femar” the Italian one.

Pretty Sweat was a revolution both from the point of view of directing the video but, especially for the level brought by the skaters with very innovative and powerful tricks on walls, steps and ledges.

It is worth mentioning the part of Sean Malto who smashed everything and everyone and made a lot of buzz after the release of the video and still today Malto is one of the most representative skaters of the Girl brand.

Girl’s philosophy has remained intact over time. A philosophy dedicated to friendship and being together, a united team with a lot of desire to create is the best tactic to send forward a brand that is long-lived over time.

In 2015, two very important icons of the Girl brand leave for good, skaters Koston and Mariano break away from the group and it is a big loss for the ‘company that despite everything does not let it get down.
