LONGBOARD WHEELS HARDNESS .

Like classic skate wheels, the diameter of longboard wheels is measured in millimeters. While the hardness of the wheel is expressed following a scale of values that is denoted by the letter A.

Most normal skateboard wheels have a hardness ranging from 95 A up to 104 A.

These hardnesses for longboarding are not suitable because being too hard they do not give the necessary grip.

Longboard wheels are softer than regular skateboard tricks, their hardness can range from 87 A going down to 77 A.
Depending on the terrain and specialty there is always the right wheel to choose.

LONGBOARD WHEELS DIAMETER.

The diameter of longboard wheels ranges from 60 MM all the way up to 85 MM. The most used ones remain between 65 MM and 75MM, each wheel is made to give different performances. Experimenting with new diameters and hardnesses will enhance your experience.

Experience will make you understand in the real world what different feeelings are like with different wheels.
A wheel with a small diameter will have more acceleration at the expense of speed and road holding.

Conversely, a larger wheel will give you a much higher top speed with superior control. This is mainly due to the larger contact area with the asphalt that will not cause you to lose grip.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT LIP (ANGLE).

In addition to diameter and hardness, there is a determining factor in the performance of the wheel that determines its various modes of use; this factor is called the LIP. The lip is basically the angle of the wheel, which can be angled or rounded.

LIP-EDGED ANGLE WHEELS.

A wheel with an angled angle will have much more traction and road holding. With an angled angle it will be very difficult to make slides and put the longboard sideways. This type of LIP is used for cruising and is suitable for dancing and freeriding.

ROUNDED LIP ANGLE WHEELS.

As opposed to a pronounced edge a rounded edge type LIP is ideal for sliding. These are perfect wheels for downhill, downhill wheels have a smaller contact surface. Compared to other wheels, the smaller surface area allows precise and fast slide inserts.

Getting a longboard sideways with a soft wheel would not be possible.
In addition to having a beveled LIP in a downhill wheel we also have a higher hardness.
The combination of hardness and beveled lip makes them perfect for your slides both on the flat and down a hill.

LONGBOARD BEARINGS

There are no bearings specifically for longboards, all skateboard bearings are also suitable for your longboard. Make sure you buy high quality bearings. The bearings to buy are the ceramics that give unparalleled performance.

With their light weight you will have a unique performance. Don’t skimp on bearings if you are longboarding, they are too important a part to be a short-arm. Even with cheaper bearings you will still have a great result if your level is beginner.

LONGBOARD WHEEL CORE

The core of longboard wheels is always with a palstic fiber interior, cores can be of two types, a small one and a larger one with almost 2/3 of the wheel made with the core and, it can be plastic or aluminum.

A larger core makes your wheel deform less and be faster by having excellent smoothness and depending on the small or large core you will have different advantages and disadvantages.

It is not so much the core that makes the difference but the position of it inside the wheel, there can be three positions, each of them determines a different response of your longboard.

A wheel is sold not only for its core but, also for the position of the hub. Let’s look at the so-called hub’s.

LONGBOARD WHEEL CORE POSITION (HUB).

Another really important factor especially for your longboard downhill set up is to choose the right Hub for you, by Hub we mean the position of the plastic core inside the longboard wheel.

We can have three different positions which are called : Centerset, Offset and Sideset. Each position determines a different feel in turns during slides and also determines the wear of the wheel in extreme longboarding situations.

LONGBOARD WHEEL HUB CENTERSET POSITION

Using wheels with a centerset i.e., the center position inside the wheel will absolutely not make you slide as easily, on the contrary they have a longer life and can be turned when they wear out.

Clearly a wheel with a Centerset has much more grip and are susceptible to creating “flatspots” much more easily.

LONGBOARD WHEEL HUB SIDESET POSITION.

Wheels with The hub in the Sideset position are perfect for sideways sliding compared to all other wheels, the hub or wheel core is placed closer to the truck axle.

This position aids all cornering entries at high speeds by making your wheels slide easily.

Using this type of wheels at extreme level brings premature wear and you have no chance to turn them. But they are the best solution if you need to go sideways with your downhill freeride longboard.

LONGBOARD WHEELS HUB OFFSET POSITION.

This is the position in the middle of the previous always on the inside closest to the truck. A core position in Offset is the right compromise to have performance in slides, you will have less wear than Side sets which degrade much more easily.

It is up to you to try the various types of Hub’s and determine which one is best for you.
Every rider with time and experience can figure out perfectly which new wheels to choose, instead if you are a beginner you just need to follow our advice.

Beginners can start practicing comfortably with the wheels found in longboards or complete cruisers, these wheels are standard for the type of use and shape of the long, only after some practice and experience we absolutely recommend a new set of wheels.

SPACERS FOR LONGBOARD WHEELS

Street skaters practically never use them but, when it comes to longboading it is highly recommended to use “spacers” i.e. small iron cylinders that should be placed inside the wheel between the two bearings.

The bearings on contact with the spacer prevent compression of the bearings and keep them parallel to each other to give you even more speed, some models of bearings are sold with the spacer attached such as Bones bearings.

There are two sizes of spacers, 8 mm and 10 mm, normally the 8 mm spacers are used but, some long trucks have the 10 mm axle, although they are very rare.
Mount the spacers and you definitely won’t regret it. harder wheels
