INDEPENDENT TRUCK CO. HISTORY.

Back in 1978 the company was founded by Richard Novak, Jay Shiurman, Fausto Vitello and Eric Swenson. These three crazy Californians started a brand that made skateboarding history and continues to do so after more than 35 years in business.

They came out in the market during those years with the first truck model the legendary stage 1 model that was unveiled in the small California town of Newark. The need to have a performance truck was the basis for the birth of Independent, in those years the trucks that were on the market had many flaws and problems.

The two main brands in those years as Tracker trucks and Bennet trucks were giving a lot of problems because one was breaking down while the second was not running well at all.

Initially the first truck produced stage 1 was a mix between the two brands at that time in the market Tracker and Bennet trucks. The release of stage 1 created havoc in the market and Independent magically started to become the n1 brand of skateboard trucks in the world.

THE BRAND’S HISTORICAL LOGO

The story of the cross begins in California when the NHS boss began playing with the old Maltese iron crosses that were used by 60s surfers and bikers at the time.

Playing with the compass and changing some lines one day the most famous logo in skateboarding came to life, the next morning the logo arrived at the NHS offices where Jay and Rick Novak rejected the new logo classifying it as a bit Nazi. Eric Swanson was determined to use that logo that was definitely ready for the world but, research was needed to find an excuse to use it without having problems.

Looking through the archives the same symbol was used by the fire department and on the sails of Christopher Columbus. One day leafing through the June 1979 Time magazine they noticed that Pope John Paul was carrying the exact same symbol which was the same one Swanson had designed.

THE BIRTH OF THE LOGO independent

The next morning in the NHS offices the logo showed up again, but having proof that the logo did not belong to any Nazi group and the 4 company bosses decided that if the pope could put it on then it could be the Independent trucks logo without any doubt.

And from that day the legendary Independent truck co. logo was born. Since the first stage 1 truck in 1978 the brand has come a long way and immediately in 1979 an upgrade came out namely the stage 2 which had many technical innovations over the inaugural model.

Every two three years the brand came out with new versions that were always improved to increase the performance of the skaters that made up the team. From the first stage 1 today we arrived at stage 11 which after 40 years confirms Independent still the world’s n1 brand manufacturer of skate trucks.
