Snowboard: The Starting Point of Every Day on the Mountain

Choosing a snowboard isn’t just about buying a piece of sports equipment. It’s about deciding how you’ll experience every run, every turn on the slope, every day of fresh snow, and every season spent in the mountains. The board is the heart of your snowboard setup and directly influences stability, maneuverability, control, floatation, and technical progression.

Many snowboarders focus exclusively on graphics or the brand, but the reality is that a properly chosen board can speed up learning, increase safety, and significantly enhance your enjoyment on the snow. Conversely, a board that doesn’t suit your skill level or riding style can slow down your progress and make every outing more tiring than necessary.

At Pleasures Milano, we’ve been selecting snowboards for over twenty-five years. Snowboarding is part of our history and culture just as much as skateboarding. That’s why our selection isn’t based simply on catalogs, but on real-world experience gained in the mountains season after season. We know the differences between a board designed for the park and one designed for freeride; we know how much a board’s performance can change depending on the profile used and how important it is to create a balanced setup between the board, bindings, and boots.

In our online shop, you’ll find men’s snowboard boards, women’s snowboard boards, kids’ snowboard boards, and splitboards.

We offer models for beginners, intermediate riders, and experts, as well as boards designed for freestyle, all-mountain, freeride, powder, and backcountry. Our goal is to help you find the right snowboard for the way you experience the mountains, whatever your skill level.

How to Choose the Right Snowboard

Choosing a snowboard depends on numerous factors that work together. There is no one perfect board for everyone, but there is certainly a board best suited to each rider’s needs.

The first factor to consider is your skill level. Beginners will need a more forgiving board that’s easy to control and helps with learning turns and basic movements. An advanced snowboarder, on the other hand, will often seek greater precision, responsiveness, and stability at high speeds.

Riding style also plays a key role. Those who spend most of their time on the slopes will have different needs than those who love to spend their days in the park or chase fresh powder after a heavy snowfall. There are boards designed to excel in specific situations and more versatile models capable of adapting to a wide range of conditions.

Weight, height, and boot size further influence the choice. Two snowboarders of the same height may need completely different boards if their body weight or boot size differs significantly.

When choosing a snowboard, it is therefore important to consider the full range of technical characteristics rather than focusing on a single specification. Length, width, shape, profile, and flex work together to determine the board’s final performance on the snow.

Snowboard Length and Width

For many years, the rule of thumb was that the board should reach between the chin and the nose. While this guideline can still be useful as a starting point, today the selection of the correct size is much more precise and takes the snowboarder’s weight into account above all else.

Each manufacturer specifies a recommended weight range for each size. This factor is generally more important than height because it determines how the board flexes and reacts while riding.

A shorter board is generally more maneuverable, easier to turn, and more fun for freestyle maneuvers. A longer board, on the other hand, offers greater stability at high speeds, more support on landings, and better performance in powder snow.

Width is equally important. Many riders underestimate this aspect until they start touching the snow with the tip or tail during steeper turns. When this happens, grip is lost and the risk of falling increases significantly.

For those who wear larger boot sizes, there are wide snowboards. These models feature a wider platform that allows boots to function properly without protruding excessively from the edges of the board. The result is greater safety in turns and better edge control even during the most aggressive riding.

Freestyle and Park Snowboards

Freestyle boards are designed for those who see the mountain as a massive playground. Jumps, boxes, rails, butter, press, and tricks are their natural environment.

These boards typically feature twin or near-twin shapes, allowing the board to be ridden in both directions while maintaining a very similar feel. This feature is essential for riders who perform spins and frequently land in switch.

The flex tends to be softer than on freeride boards. This makes the board more forgiving, easier to bend, and more fun during technical maneuvers at low speeds.

Modern park boards aren’t, however, used exclusively in snowparks. Many riders appreciate their playful nature even on the slopes, where they offer dynamic and creative handling capable of turning any stretch of snow into an opportunity for fun.

For those who love to develop their own personal style and spend many hours on kickers, rails, and artificial features, a freestyle board is often the most natural choice.

All-Mountain Snowboards

All-mountain boards represent the most versatile category in the entire snowboarding universe. They are designed to handle different conditions and allow the rider to explore the entire mountain without any particular limitations.

An all-mountain board must perform well on the piste, offer sufficient float in fresh snow, and allow for a few sessions in the park without difficulty. For this reason, it is often considered the ideal choice for most snowboarders.

Many riders own only one board and want to use it in every situation. In these cases, an all-mountain model often represents the best compromise between performance, ease of use, and versatility.

Modern geometries allow all-mountain boards to be much more specialized than in the past. Some models lean more toward freeride, while others retain a more freestyle-oriented core. This allows you to find solutions suited to different tastes and needs while staying within the same category.

Freeride and Powder Snowboards

When fresh powder becomes the top priority, freeride and powder boards come into play. These snowboards are designed to offer control, floatation, and stability in the most challenging conditions.

Directional shapes are very common in this category. The generally longer nose helps the board float naturally over the snow, reducing leg fatigue during powder days.

The setback also helps improve performance in fresh snow. The rearward position of the bindings allows for a more favorable weight distribution without requiring constant adjustments to your stance.

Modern freeride boards, however, aren’t limited exclusively to powder. Many models offer excellent performance even on groomed runs, especially for snowboarders who love high speeds, wide turns, and aggressive riding.

For those who dream of snow-covered forests, virgin slopes, and lines far from the most crowded lifts, a freeride board represents one of the most rewarding investments you can make.

freeride snowboard turn

Snowboard Shape

The shape defines the board’s overall geometry and profoundly influences its behavior on the snow.

Directional boards are designed primarily to be ridden in a specific direction. The nose and tail have different shapes, and the distribution of technical features promotes stability and control on descents. They are widely used in freeride and more piste-oriented all-mountain riding.

Twin boards, on the other hand, feature a completely symmetrical construction. The nose and tail are identical, allowing you to ride in both regular and switch stances while maintaining virtually the same feel. For this reason, they are the preferred choice of many freestyle riders.

Between these two philosophies lie directional twins, likely the most popular solution in recent years. They offer much of the versatility of twins while retaining certain features that enhance stability and control in more challenging situations.

The choice of shape influences how the board enters turns, floats on fresh snow, handles jumps, and manages high speeds. For this reason, it is one of the most important aspects to consider when purchasing.

snowboard shape comparison

Snowboard Profile

The profile describes how the board sits on the snow when viewed from the side. This characteristic radically changes the riding feel.

Traditional camber remains one of the most popular profiles among expert snowboarders. It offers very precise response, strong edge grip, and great stability during aggressive riding. However, it requires more precise technique and tends to be less forgiving in the event of a mistake.

The rocker profile features the opposite construction. The tips are raised higher, and the board feels easier to handle. This profile enhances float in powder and reduces the likelihood of accidentally catching an edge.

The flat profile maintains a more uniform surface between the bindings. It offers predictable handling and often represents a good compromise between control and ease of use.

Modern technologies have also introduced numerous hybrid solutions that combine camber, rocker, and flat zones within the same board. These profiles aim to combine stability, precision, and ease of use, offering very balanced performance in a wide variety of conditions.

directional snowboard freeride

Snowboard Flex

Flex indicates the board’s level of stiffness and is one of the factors that most influence a snowboard’s character.

A soft board is generally easier to bend, more forgiving of mistakes, and particularly fun for freestyle maneuvers. For this reason, it is often recommended for beginners and park-oriented riders.

A medium flex is the most versatile option. It offers a good balance between comfort, control, and precision, adapting effectively to many different situations.

Stiffer boards, on the other hand, are designed for expert snowboarders seeking high performance. They offer greater stability at high speeds, a more immediate response, and more precise handling, but require proper technique to be used to their full potential.

Flex should also be considered in conjunction with bindings and boots. A balanced setup allows for superior performance and a more natural feel while riding.

Splitboards: Exploring the Backcountry

The splitboard represents one of the most fascinating evolutions in modern snowboarding. These boards can be separated into two sections for ascents and then reassembled for the descent.

Thanks to splitboards, it is possible to reach areas far from the lifts, explore untouched lines, and experience the mountains in a completely different way compared to traditional snowboarding.

However, the backcountry requires experience, preparation, and knowledge of the alpine environment. In addition to technical gear, it is essential to possess skills related to mountain safety and avalanche risk management.

For this reason, splitboarding is not simply a different discipline, but a comprehensive approach to exploring the winter mountains.
